Naples’ Capodichino station, a development in the Italian city's public transport network, has reached a construction milestone with the completion of its metal roofing.

Construction is being led by Webuild, in consortium with Moccia Irme, representing Metropolitana di Napoli and the Municipality of Naples.

The metallic roofing, measuring 65m by 53m and weighing 450 tonnes (t), stands 8m above road level and is inspired by the design of a hangar.

Its tubular profile creates a vast steel web, which will soon be covered with prefabricated concrete tiles and glass fixtures.

These features are designed to allow natural light to filter through, creating dynamic light effects throughout the day.

Once the entire metallic plate is installed, the aforementioned roof covering will commence, with completion anticipated by the mid-year period.

The project, designed by Ivan Harbour of architect RSHP, will feature a circular public area with a 33m diameter and a depth reaching approximately 50m.

The station will include eight central lifts and four spiral staircases, with the lifts said to be the first of their kind in Italy, designed to withstand the highest seismic levels.

Upon completion, the above-ground area of the Capodichino station will be revitalised with pedestrian pathways, green spaces, parking, and new access roads.

The station will be overseen by Azienda Napoletana Mobilità, forming a component of the Line 1 extension project.

Line 1 currently spans 18km with 19 stations.

Webuild has a strong presence in Naples, having constructed 14 stations of the metro, including Art Stations such as Toledo, as well as Università, Dante, Museo, and Materdei.

In addition, Webuild is working on Line 7, with the Monte Sant’Angelo and Parco San Paolo stops, the San Pasquale station on Line 6, and the expansion of the Cumana Railway Line.

Last month, Webuild Group subsidiary Fisia Italimpianti commenced the construction phase of a new water treatment plant in Saudi Arabia.
