Kier has completed the construction of a new net-zero carbon school building in Merseyside, UK.

Deyes High School in Maghull is said to be one of the first 50 schools in the UK to receive investment from the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme.

The new 10,000m² building, spanning three floors, has been handed over to the Lydiate Learning Trust and Deyes High School.

The building features various facilities, including specialist science laboratories, a learning resource centre, an art studio, and a multi-use games area.

It is designed to be net-zero carbon in operation, incorporating photovoltaic panels, hybrid natural vent units, and three air-source heat pumps.

The school's grounds are set to offer playing fields and sports pitches, alongside a wildlife garden, a nature trail, and a habitat area.

These features aim to enhance learning and promote well-being among the 1,400 students.

Construction of the school began in August 2022 and has reportedly been delivered on schedule and within budget.

Kier says it focused on delivering additional value to the local community throughout the project, offering job opportunities and engaging with local suppliers.

It has also been involved in volunteering and donation initiatives with local charities and organisations.

Kier Construction North and Scotland regional director Sarah Morton said: “We are thrilled to have successfully delivered this fantastic net-zero carbon school for the Department for Education and the local Deyes High School community.

“Net zero is high on everyone’s agenda, and we are proud to have incorporated sustainable design features into this new facility."

The entire project, including the construction of new sports facilities, is expected to be finalised by early 2025.

Last month, Kier was selected by Cardiff Council as the preferred bidder for the construction of the new Ysgol Cynefin school in Wales, UK.
