Construction has commenced on a new Science Centre at Ontario Place, Canada, with the facility scheduled to open in 2029.
The project, which forms a key part of the province’s redevelopment plans for Ontario Place, involves a 400,000ft² science centre featuring a mainland building, an integrated pod complex and additional programming space compared with the previous site.
The new facility will also include interactive exhibits, educational activities and workshops.
The Cinesphere will receive upgrades to its IMAX theatre, increasing seating capacity and improving its interior and exterior.
Officials project the development will create over 1,000 jobs related to construction and tourism, with the entire Ontario Place revitalisation expected to generate more than 5,700 jobs and add $420m to Ontario’s GDP during construction.
After completion, estimates indicate Ontario Place could attract up to six million visitors annually.
The site will also feature over 50 acres of public trails, expanded green areas, playgrounds, beaches, a modern marina, event venues and the redesigned RBC Amphitheatre.
Access to Ontario Place will be supported by the new Ontario Line at Exhibition Station and direct GO rail links, in close proximity to Billy Bishop Airport.
The province’s procurement strategy will prioritise Ontario-based businesses and services under the Buy Ontario Act (Public Sector Procurement), 2025.
The Ontario Science Partners, which includes Hariri Pontarini Architects, have secured the contract to design, build, finance and maintain the facility.
During the construction phase, the Ontario Science Centre is expanding its presence at Harbourfront Centre, which will serve as a temporary location for programming and interactive experiences until the new facility opens.
The upgraded Cinesphere will function as an independent destination, coordinating with the Science Centre on various programmes and events.
Ontario Place will maintain free public access to trails and waterfront amenities, with improved transit and parking options for visitors.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: “With new and exciting programmes, more space and incredible views of Toronto’s waterfront, the new Ontario Science Centre will inspire the next generation of children and families as visitors make memories that will last a lifetime.
“Our government is proud to get shovels in the ground on the new Science Centre, as part of the revitalised Ontario Place, as we build a historic landmark on Toronto’s skyline that will attract millions of visitors a year.”
