Construction company Veidekke and its Belgian partner DEME Environmental have secured a contract from City of Bergen to redevelop a waste landfill at Slettebakken in Bergen, Norway.

The design and build contract is valued at NOK350m ($35.61m) excluding value added tax. Veidekke’s share is 50% of the contract value.

An interaction phase is also scheduled between the parties involved in the deal.

The old landfill situated at Slettebakken will be redeveloped to be used for various purposes including sports, residential and commercial needs.

According to the company, works on the project will start in mid-August this year and will gradually enter its full production phase in the first quarter of 2023.

The works are expected to be completed in 2024.

As part of the works, nearly 200,000 tonnes of material will be excavated and sorted. The waste will then be either reused at the site or processed as waste and shifted to reception/landfill.

The project works will be carried out following the circular economy principle. The redevelopment works should strictly ensure minimal impact on the environment.

Veidekke Bygg Vest director Ingmar Austevoll said, “We are very pleased to sign a contract for this prestigious commission and appreciate the confidence placed in us.

“Veidekke has extensive expertise and experience from this type of work, as does our Belgian partner. We have also worked together on a comparable project at Valløy near Tønsberg.”

“In good cooperation with the Environment Agency in the City of Bergen we will ensure that Slettebakken is prepared for further development,” Austevoll added.

A Scandinavian company, Veidekke executes various types of construction and civil engineering projects.
