Site preparations have commenced at the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium in Hobart, Australia, advancing one of Tasmania’s largest infrastructure projects.
Hazell Bros, a Tasmanian construction company, has been appointed to carry out the bulk earthworks following a competitive procurement process.

This stage will involve excavation of approximately 100,000m³ of site preparation, soil and archaeological investigations ahead of major building works.
The stadium, with a listed construction cost of A$1.13bn ($787m), is scheduled to start major construction in July 2026. Preparatory works are expected to continue until mid-2027.
Procurement for the main stadium construction contract is ongoing, with a tender process in place. The successful contractor is expected to be named by the end of the year.
Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC) is overseeing planning and delivery of the stadium project as part of the wider urban renewal of Macquarie Point.
Stadiums Tasmania, a statutory authority, will operate the facility upon completion.
The site redevelopment aims to reconnect Hobart’s central business district with the waterfront and provide a new venue for sporting, arts and entertainment events.
Tasmania Premier Jeremy Rockliff said: “Today marks another important milestone as we continue turning the vision for Macquarie Point into a reality.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are delivering this once-in-a-generation project. It will support thousands of jobs, inject billions into our economy and create a precinct that all Tasmanians can be proud of.”
Australia Minister of Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said: “The revitalisation of the Macquarie Point Precinct will drive tourism, create economic opportunity and support a more vibrant Hobart.
“The Albanese Government is proud to partner with the Tasmanian Government to deliver Mac Point and today’s milestone shows how far we have already come.”
The stadium, planned to house 23,000 seats under a transparent roof, is set to become Tasmania’s primary venue for sports and major events, and is described as key to the long-term development of the site.
The Australian Federal Government has contributed A$240m towards the wider Macquarie Point Precinct.
