The Bow tower

H&R Real Estate Investment Trust has opened the $1.4bn tower called The Bow in Calgary, Canada, designed by the UK-based architectural firm Foster + Partners.

Situated on the east side of Centre Street in Calgary, Alberta, the 59-storey building will house the headquarters for Canadian energy firms Encana and Cenovus as well as other firms.

The 1.7 million ft² tower features shops, restaurants, cafes, a landscaped plaza and an auditorium at the top.

Foster + Partners said the glazed facade is pulled forward to create a series of atria that run the full height of the tower.

Vertical access to the office floors will be directed through three six-storey sky gardens, which project into the atria at levels 24, 42 and 54 and feature mature trees, seating, meeting rooms, catering facilities and local lift cores.

Sustainable features of the building include reduction of energy use through natural ventilation.

The orientation of the atrium means the tower consumes less energy for cooling and heating.

The tower offers views of the Rocky Mountains and the Bow River Valley to the west, the Canadian Prairies and Bow River to the east.

Foster + Partners senior partner Nigel Dancey said every aspect, from the raised floors to the diagrid structure, is designed to be highly efficient.

Matthews Southwest of Toronto and Dallas was the lead project developer for the project and managed site acquisition, architectural design, City of Calgary permits, and development planning strategy.
