At 339m-high (1,112ft), Mercury City Tower is the second tallest skyscraper in Europe, the first being OKO. Located near Moscow International Business Centre (MIBC) in Moscow, Russia, the mixed-use building was commissioned in August 2013.
With an estimated investment of $1bn, the tower was designed by Frank Williams & Partners Architects and is being developed by LLC Rasen Stroy, a company based in Moscow.
Mercury City Tower is 29m higher than the Shard in London, UK, making it the second tallest tower in Europe. However, more skyscrapers are under construction in Russia that could take its crown as the tallest building in Europe. The Federation Tower, for example, is being built in Moscow and is expected to reach a height of 506m by 2016. Burj Khalifa in Dubai currently remains the tallest skyscraper in the world at 829m.
Design of the Mercury City Tower
The Mercury City Tower features contemporary European architecture and a golden glass façade. It offers maximum comfort and security for residents and offices.
The building has 75 floors, including five basement floors, and is made up of offices, residential apartments and retail zones. The first 40 floors of the building have space for offices and the remaining top level floors feature apartments. The total floor space of the building is about 180,160m², including 90,000m² for office purposes, 20,000m² for apartments, and about 19,000m² of garage space.
Crystal Tower, Russian Federation
Standing at 450m (1,500ft) tall, the $4bn (£2bn) Crystal Tower, or ‘Christmas tree’, of Moscow will be one of the tallest buildings in the world. The structure will be located on the Nagatinskaya alluvial plain which sticks out into the south region of the Moscow river, near to Andropov Avenue, about 7.5km away from the Kremlin.
The skyscraper provides separate and independent access, and lifts to residences, offices and retail zones. A spa is located at the 42nd floor. The apartments are available with a built-up area of 224m² and 226m². The commercial office space is available in six different sizes to suit varying space requirements.
Retail and parking space is located at the basement floors. The building has a total of 29 elevators and three escalators. It has access to Moscow metro system and is facilitated with an integrated ventilation system and fire protection system.
Construction of the tallest mixed-use building in Moscow
Construction began in August 2007 and was completed in 2013. The first 53 floors were completed by May 2011. By January 2012, the building reached a height of 301.6m. Construction of the 75th floor began in July 2012 and has reached the final phase, with the building commissioned in August 2013.
Mercury City Tower materials
Materials used for the construction include heat-resistant reinforced concrete. Approximately 130,000m³ of concrete and 35,000t of reinforcement was used for the construction. The façade is built of steel and glass with aluminium glazing, with approximately 1,500t of foreign steel used for the façade cladding. It is the first Russian building constructed using environment-friendly methods.
Mercury City Tower contractors
The general construction contract for the project was awarded to Rasen Construction. Frank Williams, Mikhail Posokhin, and GL Sirota were the designers of the project.
The high-speed elevators were supplied by ThyssenKrupp. Waterman is the consultant for engineering systems. Turner was appointed as the consultant for construction.
Chinese company CNYD designed the curtain wall systems for the building. The installation of steel façade was contracted to Gartner. The project documentation for construction was prepared by Mociipoekt-2.
SVEZA was awarded a contract to supply film-faced plywood for the formwork systems in January 2013.
