A general contractor led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori is set to commence construction on the T1 extension of Rome Metro’s Line C, following the transfer of designated areas by the city’s transport authority.
The extension will add 3km to Line C, introducing two new underground stations, Auditorium and Farnesina, to the north-west of Rome.
Preparatory activities are under way at the sites for these forthcoming stations, which will connect the Flaminio and Foro Italico districts, both home to prominent cultural, arts and sports venues such as the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the MAXXI museum and the Foro Italico sports complex.
The new stations will join five others currently being built along the same route, including Venezia, Chiesa Nuova, Piazza Pia/Castel Sant’Angelo and Ottaviano e Mazzini.
The Auditorium station, located next to the Palazzetto dello Sport, will include three entrances and span six underground levels to a depth of 45m.
Farnesina, planned as the line’s new western terminus, will have three entrances and reach seven underground levels at a depth of 43m.
This station has been designed with the capacity to support a possible extension in the future towards Grottarossa and Tor di Quinto.
The construction process for T1 involves significant engineering challenges, including the building of reinforced concrete diaphragm walls descending as deep as 80m and the deployment of tunnel-boring machines to excavate the metro tunnels.
The route will traverse beneath the Tiber River at three points, with the section between Piazza Pia/Castel Sant’Angelo and Chiesa Nuova stations expected to be especially demanding, given that tunnelling will occur just over 20m below the riverbed.
Upon completion, Line C will run for 29km across Rome with a total of 31 stations, from Monte Compatri/Pantano in the east to Farnesina in the west.
Currently, 24 stations are operational through to Colosseo/Fori Imperiali in the city centre, after the most recent openings last December.
Webuild stated that Line C connects areas of the city that are currently divided by long and complex routes.
