Peab has secured a turnkey contract to construct a section of the Västlänken Haga-Rosenlund project in Gothenburg, Sweden.

With the Swedish Transport Administration as the client, the contract is worth Skr1.5bn ($140.78m).

This project is part of the transport administration’s initiative to enhance train capacity and accessibility in the city.

The Haga stage of Västlänken is split into four construction contracts and one installation contract.

Peab has secured the first construction contract, Rosenlund, which is said to be one of Sweden's most complex civil engineering challenges.

The company is tasked with constructing an underground commuter train station, extending over 250 metres in Haga district.

Peab's role will also include the construction of new tracks near Lärje, which is closely connected to the central railway network and Västlänken.

The new station will feature three entrances, multiple platforms, and four railway tracks.

Additionally, it have an intermediate level to the north, accommodating a bicycle garage, and an intermediate level to the south, integrating with the School of Business, Economics and Law.

The completion of Västlänken is expected to revolutionise train traffic in the area, necessitating additional storage for trains when not in operation.

Peab region manager Berth Larsson said: “The fact that we have been commissioned to build stage Haga-Rosenlund is very gratifying and demonstrates that Peab and our organization is capable of competing for projects of this size.

“Haga-Rosenlund is an important hub in Gothenburg’s mass transit network and the station will contribute to greater accessibility in the area.”

Construction is anticipated to commence immediately, with completion expected in 2029.

The contract has been recorded in the first quarter of 2024.

This project comes shortly after Peab was earlier this week awarded a Skr247m contract by Härnösand Municipality for the construction of a new bridge in the country.

The new structure will be an arch bridge, drawing inspiration from the original bridge built in the late 1800s.
