July 19 2023

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded US-based civil construction company Granite a contract to upgrade Highway 101 in Mendocino, California, US.

The estimated value of this contract is around $23m and is included in Granite’s second quarter Committed and Awarded Projects.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will fund the project.

The scope of the contract involves remodelling four miles of median barrier and paving the Ridgewood Grade, a ten-mile stretch of Highway 101 between Ukiah and Willits.

Granite’s construction and materials teams collaborated to obtain this project, which is located near the company’s North State Street Hot facility and Ukiah office.

This project will require 56,000t of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and 38,000t of rubberised HMA from the facility.

Granite regional operations vice-president Brent Fogg said: “Caltrans District 1 is a great partner and one of our key clients in the coastal region.

“This project is a perfect example of the strength of our local, vertically integrated business.

“We look forward to partnering with Caltrans to provide the travelling public with a high-quality roadway improvement project.”

The project is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2023 and will be finished in the second quarter of next year.

Last week, Granite secured contract Option X for the Polychrome Area Improvements construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) project in Denali National Park in Alaska, US.
