Granite has secured contract Option X for the Polychrome Area Improvements construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) project in Denali National Park in Alaska, US.

Awarded by the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the construction option is valued at $51.5m.

The contract includes three major options, with Option W being the procurement of long-lead materials alongside the progression of the design.

Option Y comprises bridge construction work while Option X includes the engagement of earthworks and staging.

Option X increases the total value of awarded options to $67m since the commencement of preconstruction work in January this year.

More specifically, works under the newly awarded Option X involve equipment deployment, establishing a remote worker camp in an existing National Parks Service material supply area, as well as building contractor facilities and initial staging areas along Denali Park Road.

Additionally, the company will be responsible for facilitating access to the site and across the nearby landslide, blasting rock slopes along with rock bolting in order to stabilise the slope.

The Polychrome Area Improvements project is situated at Pretty Rocks Landslide that cuts across Denali Park Road near its midpoint at Mile 45.4.

It involves the construction of a single-span steel truss bridge with a length of approximately 475ft.

The project is expected to be completed by July 2026.

Granite expects to start construction on the Earthworks Package of the project this month.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Derek Betts said: “Being awarded this package allows us to continue a highly dynamic and successful relationship with Denali National Park, Western Federal Lands Highway Division of the FHWA, our subcontractors, suppliers, and the design team to bring back public access to one of our national treasures.

“Every aspect of this challenging project required robust participation by every team member in a highly collaborative CM/GC process.”
