ÖBB-Infrastruktur has commissioned AFRY to provide site supervision and construction oversight services for the ongoing modernisation of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn in Austria.

Project works consist of improvements to tracks, overhead line systems and other supporting infrastructure.

Upgrades to stations and various rail assets are also planned, all aimed at supporting both passenger and freight transport by preventing disruptions and offering a higher level of service.

AFRY’s responsibilities within the project involve ensuring quality assurance, managing contracts and schedules, as well as overseeing project management and billing processes.

Its role covers the supervision of key sections along the route, which is intended to ensure that infrastructure enhancements are implemented efficiently and to required standards.

The works commissioned to AFRY are scheduled to continue until 31 December 2028.

AFRY hydro segment head Ernst Zeller said: “Projects like this are central to advancing sustainable mobility. We are proud to support ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG with our expertise in project supervision and delivery, contributing to a more reliable and future-proof rail system.”

The initiative is part of a larger programme aimed at upgrading the railway infrastructure linking Vienna and Gmünd, with a focus on increasing capacity, operational reliability, and service quality.

The Franz-Josefs-Bahn serves as a significant corridor, providing connectivity between Vienna, northern Austria, and the Czech border.

It is currently under an extended renovation plan, which seeks to strengthen its role in facilitating transport for the region.

ÖBB-Infrastruktur construction technology project manager Friedrich Dallhammer said: “This is an important step in strengthening rail infrastructure and improving service quality for passengers and freight customers. We are pleased to collaborate with AFRY, whose expertise supports the efficient implementation of this project.”
