Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has chosen Willmott Dixon for a £14.5m project at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital in the UK.

Work under the project involves extension and refurbishment of the hospital’s emergency department (ED).

The extension works include creation of a new drop off area for visitors, a new main entrance into the hospital and a new CT scanning department.

Remodelling and landscaping of external areas outside the hospital main entrance will also be included.

Willmott Dixon stated that the activities will be carried out while the existing ED will continue operations.

As part of the enabling works, the company has created an internal connection tunnel between the hospital buildings for patients and staff to move safely.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust redevelopment deputy director Melanie Banks said: “The extension and refurbishment of the Emergency Department at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is another step forward on a planned journey to redevelop the site.

“The project provides much needed space and facilities for patients, whilst allowing staff to continue to deliver high quality care.

“In addition, the project enables advancements in technology and further paves the way to a more sustainable future.”

The project is expected to be completed in late 2022.

Currently, Willmott Dixon is constructing the new £43m Chiltern Vale Integrated Health and Care Hub in Dunstable, the UK.

The new 6,375m² healthcare and wellbeing facility consists of four storeys and will provide a wide range of services, including community mental health and children’s services.
