Southend Council in the UK has selected construction company Willmott Dixon as its construction partner for the renovation of the Cliffs Pavilion theatre.

Willmott Dixon will carry out a preconstruction health and safety plan, design development, construction methodology, and programme planning, including phasing, as part of an agreement with the council.

The builder will then agree to a complete contract subject to planning permission, an accepted cost plan, and a feasible work schedule allowing the Cliffs Pavilion to remain open for performances during construction.

Trafalgar Theatres operates the council-owned theatre.

Approximately £8m will be spent on the building to support a substantial extension of its restaurant, a new entrance and lobby, better ventilation, a new outdoor piazza, as well as improvements to the theatre’s bars, restrooms, lifts, and other facilities.

Construction works are anticipated to begin in January next year, with £5.5m of the project financed by Round 1 of the ‘Levelling Up Fund’, a spending plan announced by the country’s government in October 2021, with further investment provided by the local council and Trafalgar Entertainment.

A new planning application will be presented in July when a resident event will be held at the venue and artist impressions will be available.

Cabinet member and councillor for Arts, Culture, Heritage, and Leisure Derek Jarvis said: “The Cliffs Pavilion theatre is one of Southend’s key venues for culture, arts and events and adds so much to our reputation as a cultural destination and brings millions of pounds into the local economy.

“This work will ensure that we reinforce its position as one of the top ten regional theatres in the country.

“The proposed expansion and upgrade of the theatre will also help us to secure the future success of the Cliffs Pavilion, in the hopes of benefiting from larger touring shows and bringing larger audiences to Southend whilst also benefitting our local economy.”
