The Wake County Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved the design for the new Western Regional Center in the US state of North Carolina.

This paves the way for final preparations for construction.

The estimated cost for the project is between $14m and $15m, with the necessary funds already allocated in the county’s current Capital Improvement Program.

To be located at 151 High House Road in Cary, the modern facility will cover 3.4 acres and provide approximately 28,000ft² of space across two storeys.

The site, which is currently shared with Dorcas Ministries, a longstanding community partner, will see an expansion of parking facilities, adding 66 new spaces to enhance accessibility.

Services offered at the existing Western Health & Human Services Center will continue to operate until they can be transitioned to the new centre.

The new centre is designed to offer a comprehensive range of services, including Medicaid, child welfare, vaccinations, and family planning.

It will also feature amenities such as a tax payment station and designated workspaces for county inspectors and Sheriff’s Office staff.

The project will focus on sustainability, incorporating electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels, and LED lighting into the building’s design.

Wake County Board of Commissioners chair Shinica Thomas said: “As Wake County’s population continues to grow, so does our need to provide services to meet the demand.

“Our location at James Jackson Avenue served us well. Now, it’s time we transition to a new, bigger and better location, with the community at the centre of the services we offer.”

Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with the project expected to be completed within approximately 14 months.

The new facility will join four other centres in Wake County that provide similar services.

These centres are the Departure Health & Human Services Center, Northern Regional Center, Eastern Regional Center, and Southern Regional Center.
