US-based Texas A&M University Health Science Center has opened the Texas A&M Medical Research and Education Building II (MREB II).
Designed by Dallas-based design firm Omniplan in partnership with FLAD Architects, the 155,077ft² building more than doubles the existing research space for the Health Science Center on the Bryan Campus. It houses laboratories for the College of Medicine and College of Nursing.

Attached to the original Medical Research and Education Building I (MREB I), MREB II brings together all the basic science departments of the College of Medicine to one campus.
The newest addition enables Texas A&M to expand its medical research footprint.
Texas A&M University system chancellor John Sharp said: “This beautiful, state-of-the-art building will be a home for medical training and research for generations to come, meeting the needs of both ambitious Aggies and the community at large.
The building is designed to allow the laboratories to be easily reconfigured to meet the needs of various science teams.

By GlobalDataOmniplan associate principal and project manager Jeff Slajer said: “The MREB II building re-imagines the traditional laboratory experience and encourages maximum interaction between diverse user groups.
“The design breaks down silos and creates spaces that allow researchers from different disciplines to come together to learn from each other and push medical research forward.”
MREB II comprises 48 research typology laboratories, 36 procedure rooms, six drosophila rooms, one MRI room and one confocal room. It also consists of 28 tissue culture rooms, six imaging cores, a vivarium and a multidisciplinary laboratory.
The new facility features large windows and open space, which provide natural lighting and scenic views of an adjacent wooded ravine.
The opening of the Medical Research and Education Building complex expands the presence of the Health Science Center on Highway 47.
