Swansea University has appointed Kier, a UK-based construction firm, to build its Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM), a research and innovation facility to support the growth of the semiconductor industry in the country.
The £30m, three-storey facility will be situated on Swansea University’s Bay Campus in its engineering quarter.

The new facility will span over 4,320m² in space and comprising 850m² clean rooms, laboratory research facility and offices.
For the project, Kier has committed to work with its local supply chain of which nearly 20% will come from the surrounding Swansea area.
The company had also stated that it aims to deliver a sustainable and energy-efficient building. It will also use renewable energy on the project, generated from solar PV and heat recovery.

“We are delighted to have been appointed by Swansea University to deliver these state-of-the-art facilities which will be at the heart of its engineering quarter.
“This latest award builds on our relationship with Swansea University, having delivered the Impact building last year as well as a number of other refurbishment projects over the last five years.
“We will continue to work with our local supply chain to deliver this important project for the university.”
In July this year, Kier had secured 13 new school projects worth nearly £170m across England and Wales. The projects are in line with the Government’s mission to improve school buildings.
The new schemes include a combination of constructing new buildings and refurbishment projects, offering better facilities for more than 11,000 students.
