Stanton Precast has received a contract from HS2, the developer of the UK’s high speed rail network, to deliver three ‘green tunnels’ for the project.

The move is expected to create up to 100 jobs and involves the construction of four miles worth of tunnel in various sections at the Ilkeston factory.

The sections will be later shipped to site and assembled at three locations in Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire to improve efficiency and reduce disruption.

The 2.5km-long first green tunnel will stretch past the village of Chipping Warden in Northamptonshire.

Stanton Precast plans to start on site assembly for this tunnel early next year. The structures are planned to be covered with earth and landscaped.

For the second tunnel, the Chipping Warden tunnel, the company will manufacture more than 5,020 individual tunnel segments.

Stanton will produce these segments as part of the contract awarded by EKFB, a consortium of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM Nuttall. EKFB is HS2’s main works contractor.

Work will be carried out together with Matière, which is responsible for the installation of the tunnel segments on site.

The Chipping Warden tunnel is planned for completion in 2024.

EKFB director Peter Bimson said: “The Chipping Warden ‘Green Tunnel’ is a demonstrable feat. It combines a myriad of innovative techniques, from promoting safety by taking the construction process off site to delivering an end-product that will benefit the surrounding environment.

“This off-site manufacturing is the result of the collaboration between some exceptional teams, using international engineering expertise.”

The tunnel, which has been designed as a double arch, will have two separate halves for southbound and northbound trains.

Two similar structures are planned to be built at Wendover in Buckinghamshire and Greatworth in Northamptonshire.

Specially designed ‘porous portals’ at either end of all of the tunnels will minimise the noise of trains exiting the tunnel.
