Snøhetta is set to carry out rehabilitation works on the 550 Madison skyscraper, a commercial office tower in Manhattan, New York, US.
The owners of 550 Madison have unveiled a new design plan of the office tower.
Devised in collaboration with Snøhetta, the plan aims to provide modern upgrades to the tower, as well as refurbish the surrounding public space.
The 550 Madison ownership team started working on a new design after the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the tower as an Individual Landmark in July.
The new building design will see the creation of Class A office destination for future tenants. It also aims to provide a high level of public amenities for the East Midtown neighbourhood.
The west side of the building will feature a 50% larger greenspace in comparison to the existing area.

By GlobalDataSnøhetta will retain 550 Madison’s distinguishing architectural features, but it will remove earlier renovations that affected its original design.
The upper portions of the four-storey annex, the altered glass roof and side street enclosures will also be removed. In addition, it will create an expansive and open public garden for the community.
Overall, around 94% of the tower’s exterior will remain unchanged.
According to Snøhetta, the renovated public open space at 550 Madison will become the largest pedestrian area within a five-minute walk from the building upon completion.
The 550 Madison ownership team is led by The Olayan Group and includes development partners RXR Realty and Chelsfield.
