A $1.3bn expansion plan for Sacramento International Airport in the US has been unveiled, with an aim to cope with the airport’s projected growth over the next seven years.

Operator Sacramento County Department of Airports announced that the SMForward plan includes six projects and will be launched next year.

The projects include a $140m pedestrian walkway that will connect Terminal B to Concourse B, giving passengers the option to walk to their gate or utilise the airport’s train system.

It also includes expansions to both Terminal A and Concourse B, which will add gates and new amenities, as well as a new Terminal B parking garage.

The project plan will also see the creation of a consolidated ground transportation centre that will centralise taxi, rideshare, and off-site shuttle providers into a single area that is walkable from both terminals.

Sacramento County Department of Airports director Cindy Nichol said: “The airport experience is the first impression many people see when they arrive in Northern California – and the last as they leave.

“SMForward will change the airport’s skyline, but it also sets the stage for the airport’s growth and our region’s as a whole.”

Federal and state grants, municipal bonds issued by the airport, along with user fees will fund the expansion. Work on the project is expected to be completed in 2027.

In addition to transforming the airport infrastructure, the project will create new employment and economic opportunities for local businesses.

Nichol added: “Over the next five years, this transformation will create world-class facilities that will enhance our customer’s travel experience while improving crucial infrastructure to meet our growth.

“Our airfield has plenty of capacity, but our parking, concourses, and roadways have several choke points. SMForward will address these issues and create an airport ready to serve the modern passenger.”
