The United Arab Emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued a contract to build the ‘Garn Al Sabkha – Street Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project’.
The project is being developed with a budget of Dh374m with a scope including the construction of four bridges that together measure 3,000 metres (m) and can carry up to 17,600 vehicles per hour.
Once completed, the project will help lower transit distance and time by 40% between Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, towards Al Qusais and Sharjah. It is also expected to cut peak hour journey time from 20 minutes to 12 minutes.
It can also reduce 70% of the journey time of vehicles between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port from 21 minutes to 7 minutes.
The four bridges to be built as part of this project will measure 960m, 700m, 680m, and 660m.
The first bridge will be located at Garn Al Sabkha Street and the Al Asayel Street intersection.

By GlobalDataThis two-lane bridge is expected to handle up to 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The second bridge encompasses two lanes and will serve between Garn Al Sabkha Street Westwards heading to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Northwards in the direction of Al Qusais and Sharjah.
The third lane is expected to eliminate overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading northward to Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port.
This bridge is expected to be able to handle up to 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The fourth bridge will be a two-lane bridge, which will prevent overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to Dubai Production City.
The contract also includes 7km of roadwork and the enhancement of surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Street lighting, traffic signals and systems, rainwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems will also be installed.
The RTA’s director general and chair of the Board of Executive Directors Mattar Al Tayer said: “This project is part of a larger initiative to improve Garn Al Sabkha Street Corridor; that connects Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads. Its goal is to guarantee that traffic flows smoothly between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street.”
