Robertson Construction-led consortium has made a hybrid planning application for the regeneration of Atlantic Wharf in Cardiff, Wales in the UK.

The development forms Phase I of Butetown regeneration in Cardiff, which aims to deliver an integrated regeneration package to cut barriers to economic activity and improve access to community services and physical environment.

Butetown regeneration Phase I involves the development of new 17,000-capacity arena, hotel and associated parking.

The application submitted to Cardiff Council includes the Arena, hotel, and wider Atlantic Wharf masterplan.

Expected to create 1,000 jobs upon completion, the arena is being developed by Robertson Group. It will be operated by Live Nation and Oak View Group.

Robertson group executive property director Nick Harris said: “Earlier this year we undertook public consultation events on the proposed plans and have been greatly encouraged by the positive feedback received from the local community.

“The planning application considers the comments raised during the consultation which has seen a reduction to the scale of the masterplan and its overall building density.

“The submission of planning takes us, with our partners and the Council, one step closer to delivering the aspirations of the Council to create a vibrant visitor destination within Cardiff Bay.”

The arena will host events such as family shows, comedy, and sporting events. It is set to open in 2025.

OVG International chair Jessica Koravos said: “We see a huge opportunity to bring a genuinely world-class arena to Cardiff – a venue that will host the best in live entertainment, creating thousands of jobs and attracting millions of visitors to the city.”

Construction on the arena is planned to commence in autumn 2022, subject to planning consent that is anticipated in spring 2022.
