Novelis, an aluminium rolling and recycling firm, has broken ground on its $2.5bn recycling and rolling facility in Bay Minette, Alabama, US.
Anticipated to create up to 1,000 new jobs, the plant will have initially an annual production capacity of 600 kilo tonnes of finished aluminium goods, with focus on the beverage container market, and flexibility to tap the automotive sector too.
The project will also include beverage cans recycling centre, which upon becoming fully operational will increase the company’s annual recycling capability by 15 billion cans.
Site works including earthwork, excavation, and piling are currently being undertaken.

The company will build two new roadways on the site and extend the utility infrastructure needed to start construction, over the next 3months.
Commissioning of the plant is slated for mid-2025.
For the development of the facility, Novelis has appointed an engineering company for its site layout, an engineering and construction contractor, an Alabama-based firm to act as earthworks contractor, and many manufacturing equipment suppliers.
Meanwhile, Novelis North America executive vice president and president Tom Boney announced plans to invest $150,000 in non-profit organisations of Alabama over the next six months.
