The University of Michigan (UM) Board of Regents in the US has approved designs for a Division I Olympic sports complex on the Ann Arbor campus, at a cost of $168m.
Named the Stephen M Ross Athletics South Competition and Performance project, it will involve construction of men’s and women’s track and field, and house facilities for sports such as cross country, lacrosse and rowing.

Covering around 280,000ft², the facility will include an indoor and outdoor track competition venue, which will have the capacity to accommodate 2,000 and 500 spectators respectively.
The approved designs also cover the university’s first indoor rowing tank and a 2,000-seat lacrosse stadium for UM’s latest varsity programmes.
The development will provide facilities for athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, a performance lab, meeting space and locker rooms.
It is expected to add 200 parking spaces to the present 700 commuter spots in the area, at State Street, to the north of the UM golf course.
