London-based architect firm design Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has unveiled design of the new football stadium in Venezuela.
Developed in collaboration with Arup and Schlaich Bergermann ind Partner, the new Estadio Nacional de Fútbol de Venezuela will feature a brightly coloured bicycle wheel canopy roof.
Located at the top of a hill, overlooking the city centre to the north-east, the new stadium forms part of a master plan for the region called La Rinconada, which is located towards south-west of Venezuela’s capital.
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners lead partner for the project Simon Smithson said: "The hillside site created an unusual challenge and the design reflects this with terraces cut into the landscape giving way to a series of floating esplanades that provide access to the various levels of stadium."
The new football stadium will be built within the park together with a new baseball stadium, while retaining an existing racecourse designed by Californian architect Arthur Froehlich in the 1950s.
In addition, the master plan includes a new transport interchange between the bus station and the existing metro and train station, while a new metropolitan park will be established to protect the surrounding hillsides from further development.
