London’s Olympic velodrome has won the prime minister’s Better Public Building Award, beating 26 rivals including the £486m Olympic Stadium and Central Park Bridge at the Olympic Park near the Aquatics Centre.
The 6,000-seat track cycling velodrome was designed by Hopkins Architects, Expedition Engineering and BDSP, and constructed by contractor ISG.
The velodrome, part of the £93m Olympic Velopark, comes complete with a sweeping roof designed to reflect the curve of the cycling track and covered with western red cedar timber.
The velodrome roof has been designed using a lightweight, double curving cable net structure.
The 6,000 seats are split into a lower and upper tier, allowing a 360° concourse level in-between with a continuous ribbon of full-height windows.
The 360° glazed concourse level in legacy will offer spectators inside the Velodrome views out onto the rest of the Olympic Park and across the London skyline, while allowing people outside of the Velodrome views into the venue and down onto the cycling track.
