The J Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), a not-for-profit genomics research institute, has broken ground on its new La Jolla laboratory building at the University of California’s San Diego campus in the US.
The building has been designed by ZGF Architects, is scheduled to be completed in 2013 and will house 125 scientists and staff.

The 45,000ft² wet and computational laboratory building is designed to secure LEED Platinum certification.
The new building will generate 100% of its power requirements on site through solar power, and store rainfall runoff from the rooftop in cisterns to provide water for irrigation, cooling towers and washing photovoltaic panels.
The building will also provide natural lighting and natural ventilation / passive cooling. It will have native low-water landscaping, use regional materials, green roofs, recycled content and sustainably harvested wood.
Roof gardens featuring flowering trees, shrubs, grasses and succulents will be installed on the three terraces to help shade and cool the building.
