The foundation stone has been laid on the 32,000m² extension of Kolding Hospital in Denmark, designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects.
Laying of the foundation comes one year after the ground was broken on the extension, which is aimed at transforming the existing hospital into a resource that can serve the Trekantsområde region.

schmidt hammer lassen architects won the master plan design competition in 2010.
Construction of the extension requires an investment of €77m, and is expected to be completed in 2015.
The project will establish a new bed ward featuring more than 200 single rooms, a new emergency ward and a new main entrance.
The new bed ward will be located atop of the existing building, giving patients a pleasant view of the surrounding forests.

By GlobalDataThe project will also relocate the main entrance to the west of the building, to provide the hospital with a whole new identity, while offering a clear view of the entrance to patients and relatives.
In addition, the relocation will maintain and reinforce the internal flow and the hospital will be a complete structure, where buildings and the nearby surroundings complement each other.
The extension plan will maximise the potential of the landscape of Kolding River Valley by continuing the orthogonal building structure while highlighting the nature and greenery around the buildings.
Following the extension, Kolding Hospital will be a modern hospital with an architecture that addresses the requirement of patients, relatives and staff while maintaining focus on human beings, according to schmidt hammer lassen.
