The Government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched the new AED500m ($136m) Mars Science City project, which is set to provide a realistic model to simulate living on the surface of Mars.
The new project will cover an area of 1.9ft² and will include laboratories for carrying out testing and studies on food, energy, water, and agriculture.
To be equipped with various domes, the city will be built as part of UAE’s Mars 2117 Strategy, which aims to build the first settlement on Mars in the next 100 years.
Mars Science City will feature laboratories to simulate Mars’ terrain and its harsh environment through 3D printing technology, as well as heat and radiation insulation.
It will also feature a museum with walls that will be 3D-printed using sand from the desert. Educational areas will be included to attract young people across the world to study the space.
UAE’s Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, Dubai Municipality, and architect BjarkeIngels will carry out the Mars Science City project.

As part of the Mars Science City project, a team will be living in the simulated red planet city for a year to gather experience to create a reference model for future innovation around sustaining life in a hostile planetary environment.
The experiments to be conducted within the city are also expected to help find new and self-sufficient ideas in the fields of energy, water and food.
