New York-based Diller Scofidio + Renfro has released preliminary designs for architecture and exhibition concepts for the United States Olympic Museum, being developed in the Southwest Urban Renewal District of Downtown Colorado Springs.
Groundbreaking for the museum has been scheduled for early 2016.

The museum, which will be dedicated to US Olympic and Paralympic athletes, is expected to open before the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is the design architect for the museum, which will be a 60,000ft² building featuring 20,000 ft² of exhibit space, a state-of-the-art theatre, gift shop, café and broadcast studio.
Nor’wood Development Group has forwarded a 1.7-acre land gift towards the museum’s construction.
United States Olympic Museum board president Richard Celeste said: "The United States Olympic Museum will become one of the nation’s must-see destinations, where visitors celebrate the achievements of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes and experience the effort and excitement of their journey."

Diller Scofidio + Renfro partner Elizabeth Diller said: "Inspired by the movement of athletes, the United States Olympic Museum spirals up and outwards from a central atrium, drawing the public in at its base and propelling them up through the galleries.
Expressed in two parts of one body in counterpoise, the building frames a new downtown public plaza below the view of Pike’s Peak, and extends a new axis to the America the Beautiful Park West."
In addition to Diller Scofidio + Renfro, other associated firms, including Anderson Mason Dale Architects, will operate as architect of record for the project with Gallagher and Associates as exhibit designer, Pacific Studio as exhibit fabricator, Barrie Projects as national museum consultant and GE Johnson as general contractor.
