Moscow has selected US-based architecture firm 5+design to regenerate one of its 209 industrial zones for the new Riviera Mall project.
Located near the Moscow Kremlin by the Moskva river, the project will add 100,000m² of high-end and mainstream attractions to the capital, such as fashion, electronics, hypermarket, restaurants, multi-screen cinema and other entertainments.

Overall design of the development has been inspired by its proximity to the river and the ever-changing light in the city.
The exterior side of the mall will be covered with iridescent blue panels featuring a wave pattern, which will evoke the river movement and reflections of sunlight on its surface.
Three different profiled panels have been arranged along the 400m-long façade in organic, wave-like patterns to bring movement and texture to the building.
The iridescent panels will have raised profiles that naturally shimmer in response to the changing angle of the sun and cloud shadows.
Several panels have been internally lit with animated LED sequencing, which is expected to replicate the effect during the night.
Interiors of the building are predominated by light, with a design inspired by American artist James Turrell.
Natural illumination and animated, coloured lights have been integrated for the three inside courts of the mall, intended to offer a sense of identity and help with wayfinding.
Construction for the project is currently underway, involving a grand court at its centre along with retail galleries, a hypermarket, a department store, a nine-screen cinema, and restaurants with outdoor terraces and parking.
5+design is expected to complete regeneration works for the riverfront development by the end of this year.
