The UK Government has announced that the main construction work on the £85m M56 upgrade project in Manchester and Cheshire is set to commence later this month.

According to the government, the four-mile motorway section between junction six at Hale and junction eight at Bowdon is one of the busiest in the North West.

It carries nearly 100,000 vehicles a day as part of a key corridor between Manchester and Manchester Airport and the Midlands.

Work on the upgrade project will include the construction of an extra running lane on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways to provide reliable journeys and reduce congestion.

The project will include the installation of technology to manage vehicles through the upgraded motorway stretch to provide smooth journeys.

It will also involve the construction of four new emergency areas which will provide safe and rescue areas for drivers during the break downs or any other emergencies.

Highways England’s preparation works for the upgrade project commenced in the spring.

The M56 upgrade project will also include the installation of new electronic information signs, signals and CCTV cameras on overhead gantries as well as remotely-operated temporary traffic management signs.

Work on the project is scheduled to be completed and open to traffic by spring 2022.

Highways England project manager Clare Bond said: “The start of the main construction work is a significant milestone for this project which will ease congestion and make journeys more reliable once it opens to drivers in 2022.

“This is one of the busiest sections of motorway in the North West but using the contraflow system during construction will allow us to keep all the motorway lanes open during the day with occasional overnight lane and carriageway closures.”
