Kier has secured a £400m contract to build a ‘smart’ prison in East Yorkshire, in UK.

Scheduled to open in 2025, the work on the prison will begin in this autumn and offer over 1,400 modern places to get more offenders into jobs and away from crime.

The new Category C prison will be completely designed with advanced smart technology to stop crime.

It will feature an array of workshops and classrooms so that prisoners can equip themselves with new skills and find work upon their release.

With an all-electric design, solar panels, heat pumps and more efficient lighting systems to reduce energy demand significantly, it will be the first prison to run as zero-carbon in the future.

This prison will generate hundreds of construction jobs, and around 600 jobs once it opens.

UK Prisons Minister Stuart Andrew said: “I am delighted work can begin on yet another modern, innovative prison that will skill-up untold numbers of offenders to live a crime-free life while making our streets safer.

“The new prison at Full Sutton will also support hundreds of jobs, in construction and afterwards, representing a major boost to Yorkshire’s economy.”

The new buildings will be located opposite the current HMP Full Sutton.

This will be the third of six prisons to be finished as part of the New Prisons Programme after HMP Five Wells and HMP Fosse Way in Glen Parva, which is slated to open next year.

The locations for the remaining three prisons are being finalised.

The name of the new prison will be confirmed in due course.
