The road widening project of a section of the Kabankalan-Bais Road, in Kabankalan City, Province of Negros Occidental in the Philippines, has been taken up by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Worth nearly $786,000 (38.2m peso), the widening of the Kabankalan-Bais Road will expedite agricultural products delivery and improve travel to and from the south-west portion of Kabankalan city.
DPWH secretary Mark A Villar cited reports from DPWH Regional Office 6 (DPWH-RO6), which elaborated that widening was required on both sides of the road, in addition to the installation of metal guard rails and reflectorised thermoplastic pavement markings.
DPWH Negros Occidental 3rd District district engineer Rodney A. Gustilo explained that the district engineering office had already finished widening nearly half of the project length and aimed to finish civil works by July 2021.
Post-completion, the road widening from the current two lanes to four will see an ease in traffic from Kabankalan City to other nearby cities and towns. It will mainly improve the delivery efficiency of local and agricultural products that are sent from the several communities located in Negros Occidental, which will open up possibilities for socio-economic improvement in the locality.
Going through the mountainous regions of Kabankalan City, the Kabankalan-Bais Road is categorised as a national road. Most of the areas that the road passes through are agricultural lands, with farming being the primary source of income for the local citizens.
