HS2, the developer of the UK’s High Speed 2 project, has shortlisted three firms for a £370m contract to build the Interchange Station in West Midlands, the UK.
The shortlisted firms include Laing O’Rourke Construction; Skanska Construction UK; and Unity – a Joint Venture between Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick, supported by a subcontractor, WSP.
The selected firm will be responsible for the development of a detailed design of the station, which will serve Solihull, Birmingham Airport and the NEC.
In addition to creating 1,000 jobs, the contract is expected to create a major economic boost for people and businesses in the Midlands.
HS2 expects wider regeneration opportunities around the station to support up to 3,000 new homes and 70,000m2 of commercial space while creating 30,000 jobs.
HS2 procurement and supply chain director Andrew Cubitt said: “Congratulations to the organisations who have been shortlisted for this significant HS2 contract, which will not only boost jobs in the Midlands, but will open up fantastic supply chain opportunities for businesses right across the country.
“The benefits go even further, with the wider opportunities for commercial development around Interchange Station set to drive local investment and regeneration.”
The developer plans to award the Interchange Station contract in 2022.
Covering an area of 150ha, the construction site for the station is within a triangle of land formed by the M42, A45 and A452.
The Interchange Station will be connected to the NEC, Birmingham International Station and Birmingham Airport through an automated people mover (APM), which has the capacity to carry nearly 2,100 passengers per hour in each direction.
