Greencells has secured a contract for the development of the Bullstown Solar Farm, a renewable energy project in County Meath, Republic of Ireland.

The contract has been awarded by ESB and is valued at €13m ($14.21m).

Construction is expected to begin in early 2024, with the solar farm anticipated to generate 8.5MW of clean electricity sufficient to power more than 2,000 homes once complete.

Located south-east of Ashbourne, the Bullstown Solar Farm will link to the electricity network through a short cable into the existing Ashbourne 38kV substation.

A comprehensive traffic management plan will also be established in collaboration with Meath County Council.

The solar farm is one of three ESB-owned solar projects currently underway, representing a nearly €200m total investment in renewable energy.

These developments are part of ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy, which aims to expand the company’s renewable generation portfolio to 5,000MW.

Bullstown Solar, a subsidiary of ESB, will undertake the project’s development.

The project has received full planning permission from Meath County Council and was a successful bidder in the RESS 2 auction in June 2022.

ESB solar development manager Eoin Naughton said: “Bullstown Solar Farm marks the beginning of a sustained campaign by ESB to develop and construct a large portfolio of utility-scale solar farms throughout the midlands, south and south-east of the country as we move towards our ultimate goal of achieving net zero by 2040.”

ESB aims to engage with local communities to ensure the project’s successful completion in 2024.
