GRAHAM, on behalf of Wirral Council, has announced plans to initiate two motorway improvement schemes in Birkenhead’s town centre in the UK.

These projects aim to augment the town’s appeal and bolster accessibility and safety for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

The schemes are part of a broader regeneration strategy for Birkenhead.

These are supported by funds from the UK government’s Future High Street Fund (FHSF) and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Active Travel fund.

The project team has commenced the establishment of work compounds, with construction scheduled to begin in May this year and continue until mid-2025.

The first scheme will focus on the vicinity of the Conway Park railway station and Birkenhead bus station.

It will include a complete overhaul of the footpath on Conway Street’s north side, between Hemingford Street and Argyle Street.

New trees will be added alongside the creation of a segregated cycleway with improved pedestrian and cycle crossing points.

Additionally, the scheme will transform Europa Boulevard by reducing the existing dual carriageway, adding a new cycleway on the west side, and enabling two-way traffic on the east side.

This phase also encompasses the refurbishment of the current paving and the reconfiguration of the Europa Square car park, which is anticipated to result in a reduction of 50 car parking spaces.

The total budget for this programme is £8.9m ($11.16m).

Nearly £4m is sourced from the FHSF and £3.85m from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. The Wirral Growth Company provides the remaining funds.

The second scheme, which is being financed by a £2.9m FHSF grant, will take place around Charing Cross.

It will involve improved pedestrian crossings and new paving at the junction with Grange Road and Grange Road West.

This area will also see new paving, additional tree planting, and measures to restrict vehicle access outside designated loading times.

A trial one-way system on Grange Road West will be implemented, allowing westward traffic flow between Charing Cross and Clayton Street.

Last month, GRAHAM commenced construction works on Leeds Trinity University’s new facilities at 1 Trevelyan Square.
