Construction has commenced on the first phase of Edwards Vacuum’s new dry pump manufacturing facility in Genesee County of Alabama in New York, US.
The $319m project represents an investment by the British vacuum technology leader, part of the Atlas Copco Group, in the Western New York Science & Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park.

The technology produced at the new 240,000ft² facility is said to be crucial for semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Construction of the $127m initial phase will include manufacturing, warehouse, and administration spaces, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 dry pumps.
The all-electric campus aims for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, with most of its power supplied via hydroelectricity.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “The start of construction on the newest Edwards Vacuum facility signals the beginning of a new chapter for both Western New York and the Finger Lakes regions.

Edwards’ decision to establish a US manufacturing base follows the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to boost domestic chip production, including the national CHIPS and Science Act and New York’s Green CHIPS legislation.
Empire State Development is incentivising the project with up to $21m in performance-based tax credits and investment tax credits for creating 600 jobs.
An additional $1m is allocated for workforce development and training.
Moreover, the New York Power Authority is backing the project with a 4.9MW low-cost Niagara hydropower allocation and a 2.1MW High Load Factor power allocation procured for Edwards on the energy market.
The latest announcement further aligns with Finger Lakes Forward, the region’s strategy for economic growth and community development.
