Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to construct 762 new public bus shelters across the UAE emirate.

The shelters, which will include structural elements to improve the overall architectural design, are expected to be completed by 2025.

RTA intends to partner with an unnamed company to test the possible use of 3D printing technology in the construction of a few shelters.

RTA board chairman and director-general Mattar Al Tayer said: “The construction of these shelters is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to improve the public transport services, provide an integrated and reliable infrastructure and bring happiness to all residents of Dubai. The design of the new shelters is compatible with the Dubai Code for People of Determination, including wheelchair-accessible areas.”

The bus shelters will be categorised into four models based on daily passenger usage, comprising main stops, secondary stops, primary stops, and pick-up/drop-off stations.

Main stops will serve more than 750 passengers, secondary stops will have capacity for up to 250 to 750 passengers, and primary stops are expected to be used by 100 to 250 passengers.

Meanwhile, pick-up/drop-off stations are anticipated to cater to up to 100 passengers daily.

All shelters will feature shaded outdoor areas, advertising spaces and information screens to display bus routes, schedules, pick-up times, and other relevant passenger services. Only main stops will feature air-conditioned sections.

Mattar Al Tayer added: “The locations were selected based on several parameters including high population density areas, the current and future operational needs of public bus services, the integration with individual mobility means, and the adequate infrastructure and space within the right-of-way.”

Earlier this year, the authority granted a contract for the Hessa Street improvement project in the country.
