The board of trustees of the University of Alabama System has given approval to the Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority to replace its existing building with a state-of-the-art medical building.

Construction of the new building will commence this winter.

The five-storey building will be constructed at the site of the former Cooper Green parking deck.

The parking deck was demolished earlier this year.

The new 207,000ft2 building is estimated to cost $120m.

An improved facility will be constructed to replace the building developed in the early 1970s.
