Southend-on-Sea Borough Council announced that the construction of its first zero carbon affordable homes is underway.

The four new affordable homes are being constructed using modern methods of construction (MMC) as part of a major project.

They are being constructed on two unused garage sites located in Saxon Gardens, Shoeburyness in Southend-on-Sea, UK.

Energy efficient materials such as timber is being used for constructing the new homes. They will also use cooling technologies, space heating including solar panels.

The new homes will have fully accessible and adaptable designs to enable independent living.

The council stated that the timber frames will be constructed off-site before delivering the project.

Essex-based contractor Marfleet and Blythe are also supporting the development of the new zero carbon affordable homes.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council leader Ian Gilbert said: “This exciting project, not only creates four new affordable family homes in Shoebury, but it is the first zero carbon build the council has been involved with. I was very pleased to have visited the site last week to see how the project is developing.”
Construction work on the new homes is anticipated to be completed by Spring next year.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council environment, culture, tourism and planning cabinet member Carole Mulroney said: “It’s a key priority for the council to meet our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030 and this building scheme is the first of a new method of construction that limits its impacts on the environment and helps us work towards meeting that target. Visiting the site and seeing the project come to life has been very interesting.”
