Svitzer Australia has announced the start of civil construction on a training simulator building at its Port of Newcastle tug base.

The facility, which is set to enhance maritime training on the East Coast of New South Wales (NSW) in the country, will house advanced Kongsberg Digital maritime simulators to support crew training and other marine applications.

The move marks a significant step towards establishing a training centre of excellence for Svitzer’s innovative TRAnsverse tug vessels, expected to be operational in Newcastle by 2025.

These will be among the first of their kind to be deployed globally.

Svitzer Australia COO David Phillips said the investment is a testament to Svitzer’s commitment to providing top-tier towage and maritime infrastructure in Australia.

The project is boosting the local economy by employing regional builders and contractors for various aspects of the construction, including design and electrical work.

Phillips said: “We are excited to see construction underway for a facility that will provide the latest and most advanced maritime training and technology for pilots, tug masters, and other vessels.

“There will be further opportunities to connect the simulator in Newcastle with other simulators around Australia and the world, pioneering Pilot/Master integrated training, as well as several other training and familiarisation needs.

“This includes applications such as emergency response training and for emerging industries such as offshore wind development and beyond.”
