Clark Contracts has been appointed as the main contractor by West Dunbartonshire Council to convert Glencairn House, a Category B listed building in Scotland.
Work is underway on the building, which is said to be the oldest structure in Dumbarton.
The £7.2m ($8.94m) refurbishment and conversion project will see the building transform into a library, museum, and community facility.
The Glencairn House refurbishment is part of West Dunbartonshire Council’s strategy to regenerate its town centre.
This strategy includes enhancing active travel and connectivity to the waterfront path and Dumbarton Central train station.
West Dunbartonshire Council Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development convener and councillor David McBride said: “The building, which has been vacant for a number of years, is central to the high street and its refurbishment will breathe new life into the town centre, right in the heart of our community.

The latest development will include a three-storey extension to accommodate the new library and museum spaces.
The museum will feature displays integrated throughout the building.
It will showcase items from the council’s extensive collections, including a Roman Medallion from AD193 and the Skellat Bell from around AD900.
In addition, a standalone children’s library pavilion will be constructed at the rear, leading to a library garden.
This outdoor space will be designed around an existing tree, which will serve as a ‘storytelling tree’ for visitors.
The current Dumbarton Library will undergo a transformation to become a community collections store and archive.
This new facility will provide public access to West Dunbartonshire’s heritage collections.
Funding for the project has been secured through the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund, which has allocated £19.9m for three projects aimed at improving the town centre.
The council has also contributed £2.2m towards these initiatives.
The project is expected to reach completion in 2025.
Last month, Clark Contracts was selected by the Scottish Procurement Alliance for its £100m Refurbishment and Modernisation Framework.
