The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has selected Alfanar to build a 110MW solar photovoltaic power plant project in Saudi Arabia.

This power plant will be a part of a floating solar panel system, reported TradeArabia.

The contract is valued at approximately $320m (SAR1.2bn).

A 380kV substation and 172km of overhead transmission line will be built under this project.

SWCC stated that the solar plant will play a significant role in powering the desalination plant with clean energy, thereby decreasing 410,000 barrels of crude oil use annually.

The Jubail desalination plant has a production capacity of 1 million cubic meter per day.

The contract signing ceremony was attended by Saudi Arabia Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture and SWCC board chairman Abdulrahman Al Fadhli, SWCC governor Abdullah Al Abdulkarim and Alfanar managing director Sabah Al Mutlaq and Alfanar executive vice president Amer Al Ajmi.

In August, Saudi Arabia-based Alfanar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build a $3.5bn green ammonia facility in Sokhna in Egypt, reported TradeArabia.

The plant is expected to produce 500,000t of green ammonia from 100,000t of green hydrogen annually using renewable energy.

The company signed the MoU with the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

This move is in line with the Middle East Green Initiative launched by Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
