Sisk wins £211m construction contract for Canada Gardens in UK
UK property investment and development company Quintain awarded a £211 contract to Sisk for the construction of build-to-rent (B2R) site Canada Gardens at Wembley Park.
Canada Gardens will feature 743 new B2R homes across seven buildings, including more than 300 family-sized homes.
The latest contract represents Sisk’s ninth project at Wembley Park in ITS 12 years of working on the scheme.
Oakland A’s selects design firms for new ballpark in US
Sasaki, Snøhetta, Studio T-Square, and HOK were set to lead the design process for Oakland Athletics’ (Oakland A’s) new ballpark at the Peralta site in California, US.
Master planning and urban design efforts will be led by Sasaki, Snøhetta, and Studio T-Square.
Snøhetta partner-in-charge Craig Dykers said: “With its new home closer to downtown Oakland, the project will re-invigorate the relationship between Oakland A’s and the city as a new kind of ballpark that acts as a centre for sport, wellness, and culture.”

Kimco Realty begins $186m Hylan Plaza redevelopment in New York
Kimco Realty started construction on the $186m Boulevard project, involving the redevelopment of the former Hylan Plaza shopping centre on Staten Island in New York, US.
The 460,000ft2 Kimco Signature Series redevelopment will include a variety of brands such as ShopRite, Alamo Drafthouse, Marshalls, Ulta, PetSmart and LA Fitness.
Planned to open in early 2020, the open-air centre is set to feature a multi-level main street format with retail shops occupying the ground level, with restaurants facing the plaza.
Soraa’s VIVID lamps selected for City of Johannesburg Council Chambers
Global lighting design consultancy SMITH.TAIT selected Soraa’s VIVID lamps to illuminate the new City of Johannesburg Council Chambers building in South Africa.
The organic shape building features a rotunda of curved glass panes, gold glass fins and clean architectural lines.
Soraa’s VIVID AR111 and GU10 lamps with the louver and Soraa’s 25° beam spreader SNAPs were selected by SMITH.TAIT to create the required effects, while giving the designers flexibility to nuance and adjust the lighting design on site.
UK’s Bristol Arena project put on hold after calls for fresh review
Pre-construction work of the UK’s Bristol Arena was suspended after calls for a fresh and comprehensive review of the project.
The development followed completion of professional services by Buckingham Group Contracting under a pre-construction services agreement.
Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees has commissioned a new review, which will assess location, design, and the possibility of private financing. The results are scheduled to be submitted next month.
Phelps Construction completes Grammy Museum in New Jersey, US
Phelps Construction Group completed the Grammy Museum Experience at the Prudential Centre located in Newark, New Jersey, US.
Located on the ground level of the centre, the 8,200ft2 museum includes educational programming and interactive exhibits, enabling guests to play instruments and learn mixing of songs.
Additionally, the museum features a permanent collection, including a Jersey-centric display of select artists, along with travelling collections.
Balfour Beatty to construct MECD facility for University of Manchester
Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty secured a contract worth £287m from the University of Manchester in the UK to construct the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD).
This four-year project forms a key part of the university’s ten year Campus Masterplan and will support new research.
MECD will house the university’s engineering schools, teaching spaces, the Dalton Nuclear Institute, and the BP- International Centre for Advanced Materials (BP-ICAM).
British Land finalises pre-let to redevelop Regent’s Place 1 Triton Square
UK-based company British Land finalised a pre-let to redevelop 1 Triton Square in Regent’s Place, London.
Regent’s Place is a 13-acre campus in London’s West End, which is in vicinity to Great Portland Street and Warren Street underground stations, as well as the Euston mainline railway station.
British Land has finalised terms with global brand, media, and digital communications provider Dentsu Aegis Network on a pre-let of the office space covering 310,000ft2.
Willmott Dixon to refurbish old gym at University of Birmingham
Residential development and property support business Willmott Dixon secured a contract to refurbish a building known as the old gymnasium at the UK’s University of Birmingham.
The company had won two projects worth £15m at the university to create ‘The Green Heart’ and a new Research Data Centre at Edgbaston Campus.
As part of the latest £7m contract, the building will be refurbished to create a lecture theatre and new teaching and office areas, as well as transitional space for other departments.
Everton and Peel Land sign deal to lease land at Bramley Moore Dock for stadium
Everton Football Club’s wholly owned subsidiary Everton Stadium Development signed an agreement with Peel Land and Property (Ports) for the club to lease land at Bramley Moore Dock in Liverpool for the construction of a new stadium.
Conditional upon gaining planning consent and securing funding for the development, the lease will run for a period of 200 years.
The Bramley Moore Dock stadium is expected to be the first project to begin development out of £5.5bn regeneration proposals for North Liverpool.
