With its new store in Frankenthal, Douglas, Europe’s leading beauty store chain, has set standards in terms of resource efficiency. Following thorough analysis of the store’s power consumers and the supply of primary energy used to operate these, Douglas has chosen a highly innovative, holistic and future-oriented approach to set up an energy management system for the 300 m² store.

For the first time, the entire lighting system has been implemented using LED luminaires only. These can be individually controlled using a Luxmate Emotion control system. Compared with a reference store in Speyer, which is fitted with conventional lighting technology, it has been possible to save 50% of energy costs by the new lighting solution alone.

Using state-of-the-art LED technology, the lighting solution by Zumtobel meets both energy consumption requirements and Douglas’ high quality standards. Moreover, LED technology and the options it provides for lighting control open up completely new paths in terms of creative design. Appropriate lighting scenes over the course of the day as well as dynamic lighting scenarios can help to make the store design even more attractive.

In retail areas in particular, luminaires need to have a long service life, for this makes complicated and costly replacement and storage of lamps redundant. Boasting an average service life of 50,000 hours, LED luminaires are the perfect solution for this application. Almost free from any UV and IR radiation, the light emitted by the LED also guarantees gentle illumination of sensitive goods on display in the store. Another asset of LED luminaires is the option of creating dynamic lighting scenarios. The brightness can be individually adjusted.

For general lighting, and visual suggestion of a skylight, square Careena LED luminaires were arranged in clusters of six luminaires each. They brighten up the room, and also attract customers’ eyes into the depth of the room. The special feature of the Careena luminaire is its accurate mix of yellow and red high-performance LEDs, which use Cree True-White technology to create a pleasant colour temperature of 3500 K, stable over the whole service life, with perfect colour rendition.

Accent lighting and shelf lighting is implemented by gimbal-mounted semi-recessed LED downlights with a luminous flux higher than that of a 35 W high-pressure discharge lamp, which also boast impressive colour rendition.
The Luxmate Emotion lighting control system enables easy control of brightness. The pre-programmed lighting scenes are based on an appropriate scene concept, use of which is child’s play. The intensity levels can be changed individually at any time.

Combined with LED lighting, less heat is produced in the room, which has a positive impact on the store’s holistic energy management.
