The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of the Philippines has started the construction of a new three-story Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) in the Diliman Campus of the University of the Philippines in Quezon City.

This project has obtained an allocation of $1.77m (PHP92.6m) from the 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

DPWH secretary Roger G. Mercado stated that the new building will replace the old Romulo Hall which functioned as the previous IIS building.

The new IIS Building Complex will have sufficient space to accommodate students and faculty.

Besides classrooms, the complex will feature research and faculty offices, a library, a museum, a mini-auditorium, as well a prayer room.

Mercado said, “What we will build is an IIS complex that is more than just a strong and aesthetic infrastructure but an edifice of a dynamic space of cultural understanding and shared knowledge of the rich history of Islam and our Muslim brothers and sisters.”
