Construction has officially begun on the renewal of the Durme Bridge in Waasmunster, Belgium, following a ground-breaking ceremony.
The event was attended by representatives from the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer), De Vlaamse Waterweg, the municipality of Waasmunster and the lead contractors BESIX, BESIX Infra and TMI.
The initiative forms part of a broader redevelopment of the N446 regional road, which connects Hamme, Waasmunster and Dendermonde.
The project will involve replacing the current Durme Bridge, along with upgrading the surrounding infrastructure.
Plans include improvements to the adjoining regional road, a full reconstruction of approach ramps, and new links to riverside towpaths.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
BESIX is leading the consortium tasked with delivering the works, drawing on expertise from BESIX Infra and TMI.
The contract includes demolition of the existing crossing and erection of a new steel truss bridge at a site downstream from the original location.
As a result, contractors will reroute road connections on both sides of the Durme to integrate the new structure with existing roads.
The effort combines bridge building, road infrastructure and landscape integration, presenting complex technical requirements.
BESIX Infra has prior experience with the N446 corridor, having previously participated in redevelopment projects along this route.
The Durme Bridge renewal aims to complete a previously unconnected section that will tie into upgraded stretches of road on either side of the river.
The end result is intended to enhance safety and provide improved routes for cyclists, motorists and users of riverside paths.
Environmental considerations are part of the scheme. Project plans specify a longer bridge span to facilitate water flow and help prevent flooding. An ecological crossing for wildlife and a compensatory woodland are also included.

With the new structure expected to be operational by late 2027, the project is positioned as a significant development for mobility and environmental management in the region.
