Systra has been appointed as the lead engineering partner for a new metro system in Visakhapatnam, a port city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.  

The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation awarded the contract following a competitive international bidding process, the French engineering company said in a press statement. 

As the project’s engineer, Systra’s teams will oversee end-to-end delivery, including planning and design coordination, tendering, and contract administration.  

It will also be responsible for construction supervision and commissioning of the project.  

Construction is scheduled to commence this October.

The project will feature one of Asia’s longest bilevel viaducts, an engineering feat that optimises urban land use, minimises community disruption, and showcases a space-saving design, the statement added.  

The first phase of the Visakhapatnam Metro will include three strategic lines, with a second-phase extension planned to connect to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport. 

“With this project, the authorities aim to support the development of the region, which aligns with the region’s emergence as a major financial hub and a key technological centre in India, to improve urban mobility with a modern network and to reduce road congestion,” the press statement added.
