Swedish construction company Skanska signed a contract with the Trust for Governors Island to construct a new substation on Governors Island, New York City (NYC), US.

The contract, valued at $67m, will be recorded in Skanska's US order bookings for the third quarter (Q3) of 2025.

The project involves both preconstruction and construction services for a 27kV enclosed substation.

According to the company, this new infrastructure will support several upcoming tenant developments, including a public school set to open in September 2027.

Additionally, it will serve the New York Climate Exchange, a planned 37,000m² research and education consortium focused on addressing global climate challenges in the city and beyond.

Construction is scheduled to commence later in 2025, with project completion anticipated in 2027, the company said in its press release.

Last month, Skanska secured a contract with Durham Tech Community College to build a new health sciences facility in Durham, North Carolina.

The contract, which will be reflected in the company’s US order bookings for Q3 2025, is valued at $69m.

The project involves constructing a three-storey building covering approximately 7,400m².

Construction is set to begin this month, with an anticipated completion date in November 2027.

Recently, Skanska also signed a contract to undertake the main cable dehumidification for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York.

The contract, valued at approximately Skr2.5bn ($249m), was signed with the state’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

This project involves designing and installing a primary cable dehumidification system on the bridge’s four cables, along with an acoustic monitoring system.
